Asia Baraka is a 15-year-old Palestinian girl whom my family and I have had the honor of growing close to over the past 18 months. While I am immensely grateful for the bond we have forged, I regret that it developed under tragic circumstances.

Asia and I connected during the first six months of the most recent, and most lethal, Israeli onslaught on Gaza. We stayed in touch throughout, messaging daily and video-calling where connectivity permitted, and I can truly say that she has become family to me. I feared for her life the way I’d fear for that of my own siblings.

In January 2025, Asia’s mother and younger sister were evacuated to Abu Dhabi (where I reside) for medical treatment. Heartbreakingly, Asia was denied entry into the Emirates. I have met with her family several times, and her absence has been deeply felt. After enduring nearly a year and a half of terror, not to mention a lifetime plagued by war and occupation, it is unbearably cruel that the Israeli regime continues to tear Palestinian families apart. Though the bombs have stopped, Asia and her remaining family in Gaza are living in dire conditions, with daily struggles for food, water and safety.

Asia is so many wonderful things that I could never list them all. But above all, she is kind, selfless, courageous and deeply aspirational. Her heartwarming smile and relentless optimism impact everyone she encounters. Her dream is to become a lawyer, to fight for those who have been wronged. But right now, she is unable to attend school due to the ongoing occupation in Gaza. Despite her determination to study on her own, the Ministry of Education refuses to recognize her efforts.

This is why we are launching this campaign to raise 5,000 GBP, enough to cover the costs for Asia and a family member to cross the border into Egypt, where she can attempt to start a new life, resume her education, and work toward her achieving her dreams, with Palestine forever in her heart until she can return to her beloved homeland.

Asia often says that we saved her—but this is one instance where she is wrong. Her humanity is what will save the world. Please, if you can spare anything, you will be contributing towards a young girl’s future. She truly deserves it.
